A step-by-step guide

Step 1: Analyse, research & select wines

At Abbots we use detailed ongoing market analysis to inform our wine selections. Our process uses a range of criteria and key indicators drawing on market data, trends and intelligence. We examine the historical performance of the leading Bordeaux fine wines and seek out opportunities from their newer vintages that are assessed as being of investment grade.

Step 2: Source

Your Portfolio Manager will work out the exact nature of the fine wine holding that best suits your needs. The details they will take into account include your dealing range as well as your liquidity and risk profile. Once we’ve agreed on the way forward, we obtain the fine wine holding from one of our network of Chateau negociants  and supplier at the best possible price. Our extensive contacts in the market mean we can source and secure wines at optimum prices on your behalf to suit your holding requirements.

Step 3: Secure

We can help you set up your own private account at a bonded warehouse facility regulated by HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenues and Customs). While your wine is held in professional storage, they are insured at full replacement value. It is important that each case of wine is stored and cared for in the correct manner so their quality is maintained and their longevity is guaranteed.

Step 4: Validation

You will receive written confirmation of your holding followed by a courtesy call from your Portfolio Manager. They will be your contact for the duration of the hold, keeping you aware of developments in the market.

Step 5: Trade out

When the time comes to realise the hold, your Portfolio Manager  will organise the sale on your behalf. You can request to sell your wine through any channel: trade platforms, auction or private sale. We are happy to advise, assist or execute the transaction and do not charge any fees for early redemption or sales of wines bought through us.
